About the author
I was born in Marienburg, home of the great 13th century Marienburg castle, built by the Teutonic Knights in former West Prussia – now known as Malbork castle in Poland. In February 1945, when I was just short of 4 years old, my grandmother, mother and four siblings fled from the Russian invasion. We trekked by horsecart and various trains to the then West Germany where eventually I decided on a career of ships engineering.
Fate had something different in mind for me: after meeting Uta, my future wife from South Africa, I followed her to the African continent. We have three children – Arno, Kai and Nadja, whose partners are Suné, Alan and Hugo, and we are blessed with two grandchildren – Alexander and Isabella.
After many years my engineering came to an end with the sale of my company Profile Engineering and I became free to appreciate life with more independence.
Walking various parts of the extended Camino, writing ‘Journey of a Stickman’ and pursuing various interests keep me busy and make my retirement enjoyable.
